The Appian Way, Queen of the ways was inaugurated in 312 BC by Appius Claudius, and immediately became the most important road to South Italy It run all the way to Brindisi, in Apulia and started again on the other side of the Adriatic Sea to reach Costantinopolis (Istanbul). This was the road that lead to the Silk Road and all the way to China, where cultures and products from the 2 continents where exchanged and traded.
The portion we will visit is full of monuments of the Roman Age, set in a never ending countryside just outside of the Roman Walls. You will feel like being part of a painting back in time, as if you were surrounded by carriages and horses. This unique tour combines archeology, history, landscapes and nature through a timeless atmosphere where modernity gives way to history and car noise fades in favor of tires friction on the ancient roman paving. A silence broken only by the birds and the whispering of the ancestors who still rest on the tombs along the Via Appia.

Itinerary

Tour Route:
The tour starts near the Colossseum and proceeds along the Baths of Caracalla, the largest existing sports  and bathing place in the Roman empire. You will see the  Arch of Drusus, son of Augustus, building that also demonstrates a willingness to flaunt its value in a Via that was the most eloquent expression of Rome's power. We will pass through the Porta San Sebastian, the entry and best-preserved section of the Aurelian Walls, the last Roman defense against the barbarians.

On the Via Appia we will reach the Church of "Domine quo vadis", built on the place where Peter would meet Jesus in a vision and asked him, "Lord, where are you going?".

After a little more ride you'll arrive at the Catacombs of San Callisto, the cradle of Christianity and the archives of the early Church. We will stop to enjoy some food and the typical Appia antica caffè .
After the break we will go to the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella: colossal grave and symbol of the road and the  Villa dei Quintili, the largest and most sumptuous residence of the Roman suburbs.
